[10:58]<+camerongray> Got my VPS working perfectly :D
[10:58]<+camerongray> Solved the name server issue, can use cloudflare which gives you name servers and speeds up and secures the site
[10:59]<+camerongray> I highly recommend cloud flare, especially when hosting at home
[10:59]<+camerongray> Caches your site on their CDN for better performance and keeps the site online if your server dies

[12:52]<+camerongray> Hey Calum
[12:52]<@Calum> hey cameron
[12:53]<+camerongray> Build went well, no fires yet :P
[12:53]<@Calum> "yet" :)
[12:53]<@Calum> that's good though
[12:53]<+camerongray> I love the click BIOS! Gave up after 10 secs :P
[12:54]<@Calum> it's horrible isn't it?
[12:54]<+camerongray> yeah
[12:54]<@Calum> MSI's is the second worst
[12:54]<+camerongray> They could have TRIED to make it look less like a BIOS
[12:54]<+camerongray> Never seen someone so pleased with a PC :P
[12:55]<@Calum> that's another reason I wanted the Gigabyte board, this Asus has a UEFI BIOS too. The Gigabyte has one, but it looks exactly the same as a BIOS so it's actually usable
[12:55]<@Calum> haha, cool
[12:55]<+camerongray> Mainly due to the speed difference compared to the old one, no joke, 45mins to boot and become useable and another 30 mins to load IE
[12:55]<@Calum> that's pretty bad...what kind of spec/age?
[12:55]<+camerongray> Inspirion 530, Core 2 Duo so not bad
[12:56]<+camerongray> Very little on it too
[12:56]<+camerongray> They said it had been almost as bad from new
[12:56]<+camerongray> Couldn't even check the rest of the specs, too slow :P
[12:56]<@Calum> sounds like maybe it was a bad HDD, if it was that slow...crazy
[12:56]<+camerongray> Was thinking that
[12:57]<+camerongray> Not worth it really with the price of the new one
[12:57]<+camerongray> Will sell the old one
[12:57]<+camerongray> Without HD
[12:57]<@Calum> fair enough, should get a decent price for it
[12:57]<+camerongray> Yeah
[12:57]<+camerongray> Monitor already sold for ?70
[12:57]<@Calum> nice
[12:57]<+camerongray> With the new one being ?80 :P
[12:57]<@Calum> heh
[12:58]<+camerongray> 1080p 22", font scaling 150% :P
[12:58]<@Calum> lol
[12:58]<+camerongray> Went together well and runs really cool and quiet
[12:58]<@Calum> that's good. I do like cheap Sandy Bridge for that, it's fast but so cool and quiet
[12:58]<+camerongray> Can tell how low that CPU's temperature is by the size of the stock heatsink
[12:59]<@Calum> yep
[12:59]<@Calum> my friend had one passively cooled, dunno if he still has it
[12:59]<+camerongray> Ahh
[12:59]<@Calum> but it ran about 50C under full load with one fan in the whole case
[12:59]<+camerongray> Nice
[13:00]<+camerongray> Discovered the biggest issue with new PCs for old people& Passwords!
[13:00]<@Calum> haha yep
[13:00]<+camerongray> Ended up being given a list of possible ones and told to try with different capitals :P
[13:01]<+camerongray> Luckily recovered the email one from the old PC so could reset them - That was fun, took me an hour to get it
[13:01]<@Calum> haha, sounds about right
[13:01]<+camerongray> Impressed with the case too: http://www.ebuyer.com/205561-black-micro-atx-case-no-psu-pn504b
[13:02]<+camerongray> Dirt cheap but decent quality
[13:02]<@Calum> oh yeah, I've built with those
[13:02]<+camerongray> None of that shiny, cut yourself metal
[13:02]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:02]<@Calum> yeah, they're not built from razor blades like a lot of them heh
[13:02]<+camerongray> yeah
[13:02]<+camerongray> Felt solid too
[13:03]<@Calum> I was quite impressed with this little Fractal I've got now
[13:03]<@Calum> for ?28
[13:03]<@Calum> I had the R2, and the XL, this is the Core 1000 so the really cheap one, micro ATX only
[13:03]<+camerongray> Yeah - was looking at that but needed to be super cheap
[13:04]<@Calum> little bit odd to install HDDs in, but it's pretty decent for the price, apart from the ridiculously loud fan
[13:04]<@Calum> yeah, no need to get something like that for that build
[13:04] * Nat (natman97@mib-642FCA28.socal.res.rr.com) Quit (Quit: You can't fire me, because I quit! I quit!)
[13:04]<+camerongray> Yeah, is that the one with the weird sideways hard drive?
[13:04]<@Calum> just saying it's a pretty nice case for that budget, I'd say better than the ones Coolermaster now sell in that price range
[13:04]<@Calum> yep
[13:05]<@Calum> the old Elite 330 and 335 were awesome budget cases, the new ones aren't built as well
[13:05]<+camerongray> Ahh, I think I saw a LinusTechTips video on it
[13:05]<@Calum> I had to Google how to install the HDDs
[13:05]<+camerongray> OCUK or somewhere should do video reviews like NCIX, hmm, business opportunity :P
[13:05]<+camerongray> Or NCIX should come to the UK
[13:05]<@Calum> and then I spent a few minutes facepalming at how stupid the design is lol
[13:05]<@Calum> heh, maybe yeah
[13:05]<+camerongray> lol
[13:06]<@Calum> sorry for slow typing, still getting used to this keyboard
[13:06]<+camerongray> ahh
[13:06]<+camerongray> Like it though?
[13:06]<+camerongray> The inspiron had that sideways HDD mount thing too
[13:06]<@Calum> yeah, it's awesome! It took me about 5 minutes to find out how to turn the backlight on though hah
[13:06]<+camerongray> Couldn't look inside, very dusty :P
[13:06]<@Calum> heh
[13:06]<+camerongray> lol - No backlight here
[13:07]<@Calum> bit weird as well because my G11 was so much bigger
[13:07]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:07]<@Calum> so I keep hitting the wrong keys on the left side of the keyboard, like Ctrl/Shift and stuff
[13:07]<+camerongray> I think I'll need a quieter keyboard for night :P
[13:07]<@Calum> but it's awesome, I love the soft touch coating - very similar to the Bitfenix cases, and the mouse has it too which is cool
[13:07]<+camerongray> Especially when I'm at uni
[13:07]<@Calum> hehe, I did consider that but then I thought, actually I don't care
[13:08]<+camerongray> lol
[13:08]<+camerongray> Just discovered that Edinburgh Uni has 24 hour computer labs :D
[13:08]<@Calum> cool
[13:08]<+camerongray> I'll never need to leave, just live in them
[13:08]<@Calum> haha
[13:08]<+camerongray> All linux boxes too
[13:08]<@Calum> oh right, awesome
[13:09]<+camerongray> Can;t wait to start
[13:10]<@Calum> heh, when do you start there?
[13:10]<+camerongray> September
[13:10]<@Calum> cool
[13:10]<+camerongray> What could be better than a monthly tech meet up with free pizza :P
[13:10]<@Calum> haha yep
[13:10]<+camerongray> I feel the need to develop something
[13:11]<+camerongray> Would be good if I actually had an idea :P
[13:11]<@Calum> heh, usually helps
[13:11]<+camerongray> Else I'll end up writing another pointless blog post
[13:11]<@Calum> I've been at the prince's trust all this week, doing a course on self employment and all that
[13:11]<+camerongray> Nice!
[13:11]<+camerongray> What are you doing at the moment?
[13:12]<@Calum> yeah, it's been interesting for sure, lots of people with lots of different ideas
[13:12]<@Calum> at the minute, I have one more week on a work placement in a laptop repair place
[13:12]<@Calum> it's quiet so pretty boring
[13:12]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:12]<@Calum> so, I'm either going to start out on my own in May, or this guy has asked me if I want to manage a computer shop he's opening in Nottingham
[13:12]<@Calum> so I might do that
[13:13]<+camerongray> That would be good
[13:13]<@Calum> see how it goes really. I was talking to these two guys who are setting up a partnership
[13:13]<@Calum> they're doing things with a laser cutter, like glass etching, acrylic cutting, sings, that kind of stuff
[13:14]<@Calum> thinking of selling glass mousepads with my brand on them, having them etch it in, it looks really professional
[13:14] * Serpent (Archer_Ser@23E7FE3E.81128DB4.A5B83EFF.IP) Quit (Ping timeout)
[13:14]<+camerongray> ahh - nice!
[13:14]<+camerongray> How does a glass mousepad work?
[13:15]<@Calum> it's not a clear pad heh, if you look up Icemat pads, that's what I have right now
[13:15]<@Calum> it's a black surface underneath
[13:15]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:15]<@Calum> but they last forever, had mine 6 years now
[13:15]<@Calum> all it needs is a polish with some Pledge every month and it's good as new again :)

[13:17]<+camerongray> Cool
[13:17]<@Calum> I've never even been in this area, it looks confusing
[13:17]<+camerongray> lol
[13:17]<Nat> muahah
[13:17]<+camerongray> I don't have a licence :P
[13:17]<Nat> finally found a purpose for my old dell compy
[13:17]<@Calum> supposed to be meeting at this McDonald's and I can't even find it on the map...
[13:18]<+camerongray> No point in a car in Edinburgh, no parking, small roads, roadworks and diversions everywhere
[13:18]<@Calum> ah, I've never been
[13:18]<+camerongray> Much faster and cheaper by bus
[13:18]<Nat> DOUBLE THE SCREEN POWA
[13:18]<Nat> whoops
[13:18]<+camerongray> lol
[13:18]<@Calum> here it's the opposite, bus is much more expensive and much slower :P
[13:18]<+camerongray> lol
[13:18]<+camerongray> Bus service is pretty modern here
[13:19]<+camerongray> Even have mobile apps to track bus departures
[13:19]<Nat> in LA, unless you're in downtown everything is too spread for public transport to be of use
[13:19]<@Calum> ?3.70 return it is, to get into Derby from my house...
[13:19]<@Calum> I can park all day for ?1.50
[13:19]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:19]<+camerongray> It's ?1.40 any distance here
[13:19]<@Calum> if it was that here, I'd use it all the time
[13:19]<+camerongray> ?3.20 for an unlimited day ticket
[13:20]<@Calum> pretty good
[13:21]<+camerongray> Oh yeah Nat: Do you have any programming project ideas? PHP/Java? I'm having one of those "I want to code but don''t know what to code" moments
[13:21]<Nat> ooh i hate those
[13:21]<+camerongray> yeah
[13:21]<Nat> hmm PHP/Java, web based? or just anything
[13:21]<+camerongray> Web based if PHP
[13:22]<+camerongray> Java generally command line/simple GUI
[13:22]<Nat> hmm
[13:22]<Nat> i'm not sure if this is feasible with Java, in fact it probably isn't, but i'm using this program right now that's really neat
[13:22]<Nat> the only problem, its paid and i'm using a free trial
[13:22]<+camerongray> Ahh :P
[13:23]<Nat> what it does is it abuses the power of VNC and turns an old computer into a second monitor
[13:23]<+camerongray> Sounds cool but I think that's a bit beyond me :P
[13:23]<Nat> yeah
[13:23]<Nat> and a bit beyond Java
[13:23]<+camerongray> Might work on Unshorten.It!
[13:23]<Nat> unshorten.it?
[13:23]<+camerongray> Oh
[13:23]<+camerongray> http://unshorten.it/
[13:24]<+camerongray> Expands shortened URLs
[13:24]<Nat> nice
[13:24]<+camerongray> And provides WOT ratings and checks HPHosts
[13:24]<Nat> you made this?
[13:24]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:24]<Nat> hmmm, do you have an api?
[13:24]<+camerongray> Indeed - about to tweak it to use free api keys
[13:24]<Nat> ah
[13:25]<+camerongray> Currently received 72194 API calls in a few days and no way to track them :P
[13:25]<Nat> :O
[13:25]<Nat> that's pretty crazy XD
[13:25]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:25]<+camerongray> Not many normal visitors, need to figure out a way to promote it
[13:25]<+camerongray> Firefox and chrome extensions too

[13:26]<Nat> hmmm
[13:26]<Nat> there are alternatives
[13:26]<Nat> but they aren't quite as streamlined as yours
[13:26]<Nat> see how they're getting hits
[13:27]<+camerongray> Yeah, nor have safety ratings :P
[13:27]<Nat> i know a lot of them are popular because they get articles posted about them on like lifehacker or other tips and trick blogs
[13:27]<+camerongray> Yeah
[13:27]<Nat> i'll try and promote you where i can ;)
[13:27]<+camerongray> How do you go about that?
[13:27]<+camerongray> Oh, that would be great!
[13:27]<Nat> promoting you?
[13:27]<Nat> most of these sites have suggestion boxes
[13:27]<+camerongray> lifehacker .etc
[13:27]<+camerongray> Ahh
[13:28]<Nat> and i know a few people from sites like Mac OS X Hints and stuff
[13:28]<+camerongray> That would be great
[13:28]<+camerongray> Time to get that API sorted out :P
[13:28]<Nat> XD
[13:28]<Nat> o
[13:28]<Nat> i'm going to try and recreat this program
[13:28]<+camerongray> And might also hide the screenshot if WOT rating is low, y'know :P
[13:28]<Nat> it seems easy enough as i can just steam their kernel extention
[13:29]<Nat> ;)

[16:17]<@Mulreay> Be it a game or whatever
[16:17]<@BC_Programming> kickstarter?
[16:17]<@Mulreay> surely you have heard of kickstarter?
[16:18]<@Mulreay> http://www.kickstarter.com/
[16:18]<@BC_Programming> I have BASeBlock on indiegogo but haven't launched it
[16:19]<@Mulreay> Even the yogscast has got one on there for there new game 'yogadventures' think they have raised like 180,000 already
[16:19]<@Mulreay> Basically get an idea.. offer insentives and request the funding.. if after 30 days you get all the funding it's given to you to start the project
[16:20]<@BC_Programming> That's the same as indiegogo
[16:20]<@Mulreay> oh ok.. kickstarter is ALL over youtube these days and a bit more mainstream one thinks
[16:20]<@BC_Programming> I didn't launch it because part of me kind of likes the idea of working on the game as a "hobby" rather than as a job
[16:21]<@Mulreay> Of course I'm thinking of a joint project that could pay a wage for you for a few months
[16:21]<@BC_Programming> of course I/we could come up with some new game idea and start a new one
[16:21]<@Mulreay> I can't offer anything but there are people on here who could
[16:21]<@BC_Programming> you've offered/given a lot already, to be fair
[16:22]<@Mulreay> thx, but a full on project with some of you guys could make something special
[16:23]<@BC_Programming> BASeBlock isn't special :'(
[16:23]<@BC_Programming> lol

[16:24]<@BC_Programming> the latest version that I haven't released is even awesomer
[16:24]<@BC_Programming> it's like a whole new game
[16:24]<@Mulreay> I just mean a project from scratch with everyone involved
[16:24]<@Mulreay> lol, at the ref
[16:24]<@Mulreay> Doesn't have to be a game
[16:25]<@BC_Programming> could be a... thing
[16:26]<@BC_Programming> on an unrelated note, I was going to integrate the encrypted product key code I wrote into BCJobClock and try to release that properly
[16:26]<@Mulreay> indeed, at the end of the day, we come up with an idea as a consensus and submit it.. If we don't hit the target we don't get the funding.. simple.. but nothing ventured nothing gained
[16:26]<@Mulreay> cool
[16:29]<@Mulreay> I sense a PING ahead
[16:29]<@BC_Programming> I haven't used that productkey stuff yet... the one in BASeBlock is crap
[16:29]<@BC_Programming> naw was getting a tea :P
[16:29]<@Mulreay> damn my abilities have been turned off.. must be the headphones I'm wearing
[16:30]<@Mulreay> Robert Llewellyn's (aka Kryten) new book is on kickstarter as well
[16:31]<@Mulreay> Never sure if you should carry 's across to the brackets.. hey ho the wonder of language
[16:32]<@BC_Programming> haha sweet... apparently I'm going to be in the credits for the program when it's finished :P
[16:33]<@Mulreay> awesome, what is the program?
[16:33]<@BC_Programming> some sort of big database... thing
[16:33]<@Mulreay> That's clearer
[16:33]<@BC_Programming> honestly I'm not sure what it does, has something to do with dealing with databases
[16:33]<@Mulreay> k
[16:33]<@BC_Programming> I just focus on the bits he needs me to do :P
[16:34]<@Mulreay> Like an index thingy
[16:34]<@Mulreay> heh
[16:34]<@BC_Programming> btw does BASeBlock run OK for you?
[16:35]<@Mulreay> yeah why
[16:35]<@BC_Programming> just wondering, not tested it a lot on anything but my quad core machine
[16:35]<@Mulreay> works fine
[16:36]<@Mulreay> oo mmm
[16:36]<@BC_Programming> cool, I worry a lot about performance/speed stuff
[16:36]<@Mulreay> may have spoken too soon
[16:36]<@BC_Programming> oh do tell
[16:37]<+camerongray> Hey BC and Mulreay
[16:38]<@BC_Programming> hey camerongray
[16:38]<+camerongray> Busy working on the unshortenit API to require a key, had over 70,000 API calls in the last few days
[16:38]<@BC_Programming> cool
[16:38]<+camerongray> fun fun fun!
[16:38]<@Mulreay> Well normally I use it on my other laptop (I have this laptop for irc, PC for big games, linux laptop for... linux and this other crappy laptop for running smaller games and programs.. just tried to play on my irc laptop and the update has stalled.. I would use the other laptop but would have to unplug something and start up etc
[16:39]<@BC_Programming> update is busted
[16:39]<@BC_Programming> I think
[16:39]<@Mulreay> Can't start the game then
[16:39]<@Mulreay> OH wait sorry
[16:39]<@BC_Programming> you can skip it, I think- change the shortcut, and add /skipupdate to the command line
[16:40]<@BC_Programming> but I think it shows a yes/no dialog and you can just decline too
[16:40]<@Mulreay> That was weird.. there was only a 'update yes' just restarted and there was a no
[16:40]<@BC_Programming> suuuure :P
[16:40]<@Mulreay> Yeah but game working fine now
[16:41]<@Mulreay> I may have just been on auto and clicked yes to be fair
[16:41]<@BC_Programming> the version I've yet to release changes everything man... you can control a little character that runs around and breaks blocks, very similar to mario
[16:41]<@Mulreay> This is what happens when you have multiple computers running :p everything is on auto
[16:42]<@Mulreay> sounds cool
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> idea is that some levels will require "teamwork" between the character and the paddle to do stuff
[16:42]<@Mulreay> You just gave me an idea for the game
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> tell tell
[16:42]<@Mulreay> This may take a sec
[16:42]<@BC_Programming> ok
[16:45] * camerongray (camerongra@mib-6F9EA912.dyn.plus.net) Quit (Quit: camerongray)
[16:45]<@Mulreay> OK tower 'defence games' allow you to place defensive blocks, why not in your game... you gain a bonus and that allows you to place some blocks may be 3-4 blocks in front of your paddle that can either deflect returning balls or send out non bouncy shots forward.. mmm thought in progress
[16:46]<@BC_Programming> interesting
[16:47]<@BC_Programming> I wonder how that could work... I'm thinking two ways, either have it directly placed with the mouse, or, it could be a sort of "shot"
[16:47]<@BC_Programming> you shoot something, and then when it get's to where you want, you press it again and it turns into a block
[16:47]<@BC_Programming> and if it hits a block it makes a block underneath it type thing
[16:48]<@Mulreay> Yeah that would be easier because the mouse still needs to control the paddle
[16:48]<@BC_Programming> that could fit into other puzzles as well
[16:48]<@BC_Programming> like having to build a bridge for the game character or something
[16:48]<@Mulreay> yeah
[16:49]<@BC_Programming> I guess that it would be a powerup, and it would be exclusive to the existing shooting powerup
[16:49]<@BC_Programming> in that you can't have both at the same time
[16:50]<@Mulreay> You could make it level specific.. make the level suite that type of gameplay
[16:50]<@BC_Programming> that's already there sort of... each level can explicitly say what powerups are allowed to spawn :P
[16:51]<@Mulreay> ahh ok
[16:52]<@BC_Programming> I'm actually stuck on a problem with it and haven't sussed it out in a good way so waiting for that epiphany
[16:52]<@Mulreay> wish I could help
[16:53]<@BC_Programming> the epiphany always comes
[16:53]<@BC_Programming> sometimes it takes minutes, sometimes days
[16:53]<@BC_Programming> I thought of some less than elegant solutions but don't want to code myself in a corner
[16:53]<@Mulreay> yeah
[16:54]<@BC_Programming> I added a new framework to manage and deal with the gamecharacter (the platforming guy) having powerups and abilities
[16:54]<@BC_Programming> the issue is that I have a timed powerup, like say some games have invincibility or invisibility that only lasts a limited time
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> my problem is with powerups that change the character when they start, and remove it when they end, because "removing" the change might not work
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> like if there was a powerup that made the character red, and one that made them blue
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> if they got the red powerup, they would turn red
[16:55]<@BC_Programming> and that powerup would go "ok, when I am finished I'll make the character this colour" and save what the character colour is at that time
[16:56]<@BC_Programming> and the blue one does the same thing, and makes them blue, and saves that it should make them red
[16:56]<@BC_Programming> the problem is that the red one runs out first, makes them normal colour, and then the blue one runs out and makes them red again
[16:58]<@BC_Programming> actually I might have thought of a better solution just now... will make a note of it for later
[17:19]<@BC_Programming> may have sussed it
[17:20]<@BC_Programming> had to think of it from another direction heh
[17:32]<@BC_Programming> it works yay
[17:39]<@Mulreay> cool
[18:32]<@Mulreay> I love hot food, but I just abused the cayan pepper
